The incoming chairman of Myanmar’s ruling political party has urged his party members to live up to the promises they made to the public about serving thier interest.
Thura Shwe Mann, the chairman of the Union Solidarity and Development Party replacing President Thein Sein, reminderd the politicians at a gathering of youth members of the party and a ceremony to form youth groups for capacity-building on Wednesday.
At a time when the country is in democratic transition trying to develop market economy, any favoritism in giving business opportunities should be avoided. Moreover, the party’s functions must be transparent, he said.
Public trust cannot be won if the members do not keep doing what they have promised, Shwe Mann warned.
“All of you must show transparency in what you are doing. You must tolerate criticisms from the media. You must have responsibility and ditch authoritative acts. Democracy must be developed within the party. We all need to accept proposals and debate,” Shwe Mann told the party members.
The party chairman also spoke of the need to listen to public voice and fulfill their wishes, urging his members to refrain from inappropriate behaviour.
He said: “The previous governments rendered assistance for a party formation and for its long-term survival. It is the best time to fulfill public needs and wishes as the present government is formed with most of our party members.”
Shwe Mann told reporters that he had taken over duties of chairmanship within days after the party’s first congress was held last October.
